Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. When her father passed away in the role of a carnival barker at the age of an infant, she had to help provide for the family by working as a maid and server. Ruth lived in a slum Boston tenement neighborhood, Massachusetts. She attended school in the area. She quit school in just two years in order to study acting. She faced many obstacles on her path to success. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos for a magazine about crime however, no theatre jobs were forthcoming. Following a short time as a club hat girl after which she decided to come back home and quit the job she was working in. The city of Boston was in which she was employed during the late night, she was an actor for New England Repertory Company and during the day she was an usherette. In addition, she was a drama student and eventually graduated from the Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
